Maxime needed to “feel” his interlocutor, to understand the deep motivation of their emotions.
His projects addressed directly their motivation, not their speech. The customers where generally comfortable and durably dazzled with his proposals. I remember customers coming with genuine fixed views and going back fully happy with a different.
If Maxime thinks this miracle won’t work he didn’t hesitate to say it and get out of the business opportunity.
A famous case is the one of a sultan planning to materialize the most wonderful palace.
Maxime has been invited and flew to the sultanate. During diner he understood the aim of the palace is to credit the sultan’s ancestry by demonstrating their culture.
Feeling he has to betray either himself, either the sultan’s ancestry he just said : “Your project is lordly and generous. I’m flattered by your calling me. The things I succeed to do well are Maxime Old’s. Your ancestry are needing their true culture. I’m not the right person for your project.”
What was the secret of his creating process? He had a permanent bubbling of ideas. Once an opportunity arize, the bubbling turn to burst. Very often during restaurant lunches, a simple enquire drove to a specific drawing allover the paper tablecloth, which, in turn, was preciously taken away, with its stains by the enquirer!
By 60 tears of carrer he finalized 3000 different work references, approximately one per week. The sketches and the variations are not in this number. Indeed, Maxime Old enjoyed to study variations of his works in order to provide his customer with a unique, fully satisfying result. The cabinet is a good example, it is a unique piece and moreover Maxime designed the Monogram for the owner.
