Maxime Old childhood : Louis Old 1914-1918 war

Let’s start from the childhood: Maxime Old was born on December 13, 1910 in Maisons Alfort close to Paris.

His father, Louis, of german origine, was a cabinetmaker and woodcarver whose business was established in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine area of Paris.

Maxime’s mother, Maximilienne, was of Italian origin, and she too came from a family of furniture makers.

Louis was leading the joint woodworkshop. Louis went off to war in 1914. He was gassed in the war and returned from the front.

He taught his son a lot about respect for values, manual labor and high quality work, but little about innovative design.

With Louis off at war, Maximilienne labored as a seamstress to support Maxime and his elder sister Jeanne.

Maxime was a good boy, no special story at this point. He went to the neibourg primary school and to the Arago secondary school in Paris. A woman of vision, Maximilienne convinced Louis to send Maxime off to “continue his studies” up to 18, rather than simply heading onto the factory floor at the age of 14.

Maxime passed in the Boulle School (the leading training program for furniture makers), named for André-Charles Boulle the marvelous woodwork specialist of King Louis XIV.

When Louis was thick and died in 1930, Maximilenne took care of the woodworkshop until the end of Maxime Old childhood and study. Here how it looked like :
